'Raw Spirit' by Iain Banks is a rare old
blend.
A healthy slug of travelogue, hints of petrolhead, an undercurrent of
politics and autobiographical notes.
There's also a wee bit about whisky as well.
Having inspired you to buy a bagful of miniatures (yeah, like you needed
an excuse in the first place), you stand poised over your first dram.
And wonder what it was that Mr Banks said about it.
And you pick up the book and turn to the index.
Which isn't there.Because, it's
not a reference work (see Michael Jackson's superlative Michael
Jackson's Malt Whisky Companion for that. And if you're thinking,
Michael Jackson writes about whisky?, you really do need to get out
more. Or certainly read more.)
So, as a service to maltheads
everywhere, here's an index that highlights three things;
- where a specific distillery or
malt is mentioned
- major entries for a distillery
(in bold)
- tasting notes for a specific malt
(in bold and underlined)

Thank Andi Evans for the devilish
detail, strung together when he wasn't causing mayhem with his band
Soliloquy (see
www.soliloquy-prog.co.uk for all the gory details)
And Simon Johnson managed to tear himself away from
www.haddonstuff.f9.co.uk for long enough to work out where the
tasting notes were buried. Mainly so he could filch ideas for his own
malt whisky reviews at
